Japan: Kyoto VI - Ryoanji Temple

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Most people would visit the more famous Kinkakuji Temple, and forgo the other less famous temples in the vicinity. Then they do not know what they are missing. I'm always one to opt for the less beaten path (as long as it's safe.)
From Kinkakuji Temple to Ryoanji Temple, it takes 20 min by walking or 5 min by bus. If the weather is good, the walk would be rather refreshing as you can see the local houses. Simply ask the traffic conductor which way to turn when you reach the road junction after Kinkakuji and keep heading down the street. There are some signs, so just keep the faith and keep walking.
500 yen per entry from 8am-5pm
Pretty flowers would great you when you reach =)
Aren't they awesome in making you feel good. I love flowers!
Before you even reach the main hall, you'll be greeted with willow sakuras, cascading down like a gentle waterfall (in spring that is) It's so pretty!
The famous rock garden comprising of 15 rocks is viewed from the Hojo, which is the residence of the main priest.
Shoes removal is an art in Japan. For Ryoanji, you'll have to remove your shoes to enter the hall. Please remember never to step on the wooden platform with your shoes on, you are suppose to remove it before stepping on to it. Also, you are not supposed to sit on the wooden platform to remove or wear your shoes.
You can sit an observe this Zen garden at the side. Take a breather here, and if you feel up to it, count the 15 rocks. Apparently, no matter from which vantage point you take, one of the rocks will always be hidden from you. Please do not walk into the garden though.
Once you exit the hall, turn right, and you will come to various paths that leads you to more landscaping beauty. Do not be too quick to exit, for you miss out more gorgeous sights. Take your time to meander around, and take photos before you exit.
We saw this pretty German girl who stopped and smiled shyly as we took her photos.
I saw momiji (autumn leaves) along the way, it's quite surprising to see them in April. But they add a really beautiful shade to the surroundings.
That's a lot of photos for Ryoan-ji. A temple that has more unstated glory than just the Zen garden. Hope you enjoy the flowers!
Next up: Ninna-ji Temple
