Japan: Kyoto XII - Nijo Castle & Nikkishi Market

Nijo Castle (二条城, Nijōjō), a UNESCO world heritage site, was built in 17th Century, during Japan's feudal era. The intricate castle palace architecture gives you a fine glimpse of the grandeur of the feudal age.

From Kyoto Station, take the Karasuma Subway Line to Karasuma-Oike Station.  Then, transfer to the Tozai Line and alight at  Nijojo-mae Station. It takes about 20 minutes. From there, follow the signs that leads to Nijo Castle (5-10 minutes walk). 600 yen.

The place is rather big and if you can, take a walk into the gardens! The flowers in Japan always take my breath away.

From there we headed to the Nishiki Market (錦市場, Nishiki Ichiba). Known as Kyoto's Kitchen, this is a place to visit for budding cooks. It is reached within walking distance from Shijo Station on the Karasuma Subway Line or Karasuma or Kawaramachi Stations on the Hankyu Line.

For us, we took a taxi. The markets are housed in your everyday buildings, and if you don't really know where you're going, you might take some while to find your way there.

The thing about Japanese markets is that they are always clean. There's nary a fishy smell and everything is always neatly displayed. Here, you'll find fresh produce, seafood, vegetables, and dried produce.

Turn a corner and you'll find restaurants and local Kyoto specialties and eateries.

It's a great place to get lost in and have fun sampling all the local eats!
