Penang Street Food Review

You know what I like about Asian food? Variety. There's always lots to choose from, and the taste varies greatly, so I'm never bored. And you know what's great about Singapore, we don't need to travel anywhere, you can taste the great taste of the world.

Today we're going on a food trip to Penang, located in Malaysia.

Penang Street, as the name suggest, has its concept built around traditional localized Malaysian food fare wrapped up in urban context. What first caught my attention would be it's deco. The turquoise colour scheme has a very attractive, yet soothing effect. Coupled with the street style drawings on the wall, there's a hark back to the good old bustle of hawker fare.

The portions are not huge. So I'm being very serious when I say these are for 2 ladies. Haha. Who cleared every single morsel of food. Ops. Need to hit the gym later.

Belacan Wings
Belacan (pronouced bur-LA-chan) is shrimp paste. It is usually fried together with chilli paste and called Sambal Belacan. Many a meal cannot go without this spicy, aromatic chilli concoction. While this dish doesn't have sambal added in, there is still the tangy taste of the shrimp paste. But I must conclude that the shrimp paste marination is not really through and through, and coupled with the chicky taste of frozen chicken, it's a good dish, just lacking finesse in the handling.

Stir-fried Assorted Vegetables

It's a simple dish. Not too oily, and rather fragrant. Pleasing to eat, but not very memorable.

 Cuttlefish with Kang Kong
If you like the rojak paste and cuttlefish, you'll love the fusion of this unqiue dish. The cuttlefish is tender and succulent and fresh, and you seldom get to eat cuttlefish purely presented in its form. It's a must-try for the adventurous and uninitiated.

Fruit Rojak
I love love love Rojak, especially when it's shared with so many people, and everyone is fighting to eat all their favourite type of food. What I miss from this rojak is definitely my favourite fried fritters (or you tiao). But other than that, what I love about this is that I feel like it's not too much of a sin to eat the rojak paste and peanuts, cause I'm eating fruits >.<

Buah Long Long drink
Oh man! Last but not least, this has to be my favourite drink here! Buah Long Long drink tastes like sour plum drink but with that extra punch. It's official name is Spondias dulcis. After you see that name, you know why Buah Long Long is so much catchy a name. It is also known as KeLongLong, Golden Plum, and Golden apple. What pretty names! It's very very refreshing, especially on a hot day. Must must try!

"We believe good food is to be shared and enjoyed with the people you love."
Agree!

This meal was enjoyed at Funan Shopping Mall, which has since closed for refurbishment.
Fret not though, Penang Street has 2 more outlet at Eastpoint Mall and NUH Medical Center.

All in all, it's a good place to eat, Albeit a little pricey for the assorted dishes, because of it's small portion. It is truly urbanised traditional food, which being the Kampong girl at heart, I don't find the warmth in the food presented. It is like our concrete jungle, tasty but lack the human warmth.
